It is a residence permit
The official status is a temporary residence permit—not a separate visa category—even though people commonly search for it as a digital nomad visa.

THE PERMIT EXPLAINED
The phrase “digital nomad visa” is commonly used online. Legally, Slovenia offers a temporary residence permit for digital nomads under Article 51.a of the Foreigners Act. It allows qualifying third-country nationals to live in Slovenia while carrying out remote work that remains outside the Slovenian labour market.
The official status is a temporary residence permit—not a separate visa category—even though people commonly search for it as a digital nomad visa.
The permit may be issued for up to one year. Where the application is based on an employment or service contract, its duration can be limited to the contract term.
You must work remotely for an employer or business outside Slovenia, under a qualifying contract, or as a self-employed person abroad.
Slovenia introduced this specific temporary-residence route on 21 November 2025.
ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS
You must meet both the general conditions for temporary residence and the specific rules for qualifying remote work. The central test is that your work does not place you in the Slovenian labour market.
You are a national of a country outside the EU and EEA
You work remotely using communication technology
Your employer, contracting business or self-employment is based outside Slovenia
You can prove monthly funds of at least twice Slovenia's average monthly net salary
You hold a valid passport and appropriate health insurance
You can provide a criminal-record certificate from your country of origin
Your file must show foreign employment, a civil-law service contract with a business outside Slovenia, or self-employment abroad, together with evidence that the work is performed remotely.
The rule is twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia. Because the underlying wage figure changes, the exact euro amount should be checked immediately before filing.
A digital-nomad permit cannot be extended. A new application for the same purpose is possible six months after the previous permit expires.
Your application is filed either at a Slovenian diplomatic mission abroad or, if you already reside here legally, at the competent administrative unit. We handle the submission and represent you throughout.
The permit can't be extended, but we can often arrange a switch to another residence permit from within Slovenia — no need to leave the country. We handle it all, well before the permit expires.
Eligible family members may apply for family reunification at the same time. Additional funds must be shown for family members, and each application requires its own supporting documents.
A residence permit does not by itself settle every tax question. Your tax position depends on your residence, family move, ties and work arrangement, so it should be reviewed separately.
WE HANDLE THE PROCESS
You get one clear plan, a document list built around your work arrangement and guidance through every practical step—from the first eligibility check to collecting the residence card.
We review your nationality, employer or business structure, income evidence, timing and family plans before you commit to the move.
We identify the exact documents needed and explain which records may require translation, certification or legalisation.
We prepare and check the application package, coordinate the filing route and answer practical questions during the procedure.
We guide the personal collection and address-registration steps, then help you plan family, tax and longer-term residence questions.

Slovenia's “digital nomad visa” is officially a temporary residence permit for digital nomads under Article 51.a of the Foreigners Act. It allows eligible non-EU and non-EEA nationals to live in Slovenia while working remotely for an employer, contracting business or their own self-employment established outside Slovenia.
Official sourceA qualifying applicant is a non-EU and non-EEA national who works remotely through communication technology, either as an employee of a business outside Slovenia, under a civil-law contract with a business outside Slovenia, or as a self-employed person abroad. The applicant must also meet Slovenia's general temporary-residence conditions.
Official sourceSlovenia's digital nomad permit may be issued for up to one year and cannot be extended. Where the application is based on an employment or civil-law contract, its validity can be limited to the contract term. A new digital-nomad application may be filed six months after the previous permit expires.
Official sourceA digital nomad must show monthly means of subsistence equal to at least twice Slovenia's average monthly net salary. The underlying salary figure changes, so the exact euro threshold should be confirmed immediately before the application is filed. Additional funds are required for accompanying family members.
Official sourceThe standard file includes the completed application form, a suitable photograph, a valid passport, health insurance covering at least emergency medical care in Slovenia, proof of sufficient funds, a criminal-record certificate from the country of origin, and proof of qualifying foreign remote work or self-employment.
Official sourceAn applicant abroad files at a Slovenian diplomatic mission or consulate. A foreign national who is already legally staying in Slovenia may file at any Slovenian administrative unit. The residence card must ultimately be collected in person.
Official sourceNo. The digital nomad route is based on work for an employer or contracting business outside Slovenia, or self-employment abroad, with the work performed remotely. It is not admission to the Slovenian labour market; local employment requires another appropriate legal basis.
Official sourceA qualifying digital nomad does not need the labour-market consent normally issued by the Employment Service of Slovenia because the person is not entering the Slovenian labour market. This exception applies only while the work continues to meet the digital-nomad conditions.
Official sourceYes. Eligible family members can apply for family reunification immediately and may file at the same time as the digital nomad. Separate supporting documents and additional means of subsistence are required for family members.
Official sourceYes. During the validity of a digital nomad permit, the holder may apply for another type of temporary residence permit based on a different purpose, such as qualifying employment in Slovenia, provided the conditions for that new permit are met.
