Before you file
The most expensive mistakes happen when an applicant assumes that years of residence are the only condition. Gaps in residence, the wrong legal route, weak evidence or starting a citizenship release too early can change the whole case.
01
Actual residence, continuity and lawful immigration status are assessed together — not just the date of your first permit.
02
Residence, income, language, family status and citizenship evidence must match the legal route you rely on.
03
First check the route, exceptions and order of events. Do not take an irreversible step based on generic advice.
Your legal route
Ten years is the general rule for ordinary naturalisation. Specific circumstances can mean a shorter residence period or different conditions.
The general rule is 10 years of actual residence in Slovenia, including the final 5 years continuously before applying, with lawful foreign-national status.
A special route may apply after at least 3 years of marriage and at least 1 year of continuous actual residence in Slovenia, subject to the other conditions.
A person who completed at least a higher-education programme in Slovenia may have a shorter requirement: at least 7 years of residence, including the final continuous year.
Birth and lifelong residence in Slovenia, Slovenian ancestry, refugee status, statelessness and other circumstances may lead to different rules.
Not sure which route applies to you?
That is normal. The initial assessment exists to stop you from starting down the wrong path.

Meeting one condition does not replace missing evidence or another condition that has not been met.
You are at least 18 years old
Release from your current citizenship, or proof that you will obtain it — unless a statutory exception applies
The required period of actual and continuous residence in Slovenia with lawful foreign-national status
Sufficient means for the material and social security of you and the people you support
Slovenian language ability for everyday communication, proven in the prescribed way
The relevant conditions concerning criminal convictions and residence in Slovenia
No threat to Slovenia's public order, security or defence
Settled tax obligations and the required oath before the process is completed
This is a summary of general information, not a decision on your eligibility. Special routes and exceptions can change individual conditions.
Documents
We first create the checklist for your legal route. Only then do you obtain the records, translations and certificates your case actually needs.
A valid passport, CV, civil-status records and other public documents relevant to your legal route.
Evidence showing actual residence, continuity and your lawful status as a foreign national.
Evidence of sufficient means, Slovenian language ability, tax obligations and other applicable conditions.
Citizenship and civil-status certificates and, where required, evidence or assurance concerning release — obtained and translated in the correct order.

Why Slovenia Law
We do not promise a decision made by a public authority. We provide a clear strategy, an organised file and guidance throughout the process.
Speak with a native Serbian speaker whenever preferred. Complex legal steps are explained clearly without losing important nuance.
We handle most preparation and coordination online and tell you clearly when an in-person official step is required.
The aim is to find gaps before they become a request for more evidence, a delay or a larger problem.
You receive a defined scope and fixed quote before work begins, with partners coordinated through one point of contact.
Regulated representation, notarial work, certified translations and other specialist advice are provided by appropriately licensed professionals in our partner network. Slovenia Law leads the case strategy and coordination.
Share the basics about your residence and possible legal route. You will receive an initial assessment with no obligation.

Current official information explained for citizens of Serbia.
Legal information reviewed on 14 September 2026.
Yes, if the applicant meets the requirements for ordinary naturalisation or a special statutory route. The authority assesses the conditions and evidence in the individual procedure.
Official sourceFor ordinary naturalisation, the general rule is at least 10 years of actual residence in Slovenia, including the final 5 years continuously before applying. Other statutory routes can have shorter periods or different conditions.
Official sourceFor ordinary naturalisation Slovenia generally requires release or proof that release will follow, subject to statutory exceptions. Serbia permits dual citizenship in certain situations, but that does not itself remove the Slovenian condition. Do not begin a release procedure before your route and sequence have been reviewed.
Official sourceOrdinary naturalisation requires proof of Slovenian for everyday communication, generally through a certificate showing a passed basic-level examination. Special rules apply in certain situations.
Official sourceThe exact file depends on the route. It may include proof of Serbian citizenship, civil-status records, family-status evidence and any documents concerning release, together with the required translations or authentication.
Official sourceExtraordinary naturalisation is a special route to Slovenian citizenship under less stringent conditions, granted where admission is in the national interest — typically on scientific, economic, cultural, national, or similar grounds. It is discretionary and decided by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.
Official sourceThere is no single reliable timeframe for every case. Duration depends on the legal route, completeness of evidence, official checks, additional-document requests and, where relevant, the release from current citizenship.
Official sourceAn adult who obtains Slovenian citizenship by naturalisation may apply for a minor child if the conditions in Article 14 of the Slovenian Citizenship Act are met. The family situation is best reviewed as a whole.
