Slovenia Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements, Income and Application Process

Slovenia’s digital nomad residence permit is for eligible non-EU/EEA nationals working remotely for a foreign business or as self-employed persons abroad, without entering Slovenia’s labour market. It lasts up to one year and cannot be extended. Applicants need sufficient means of at least twice the applicable average monthly net salary, insurance and supporting documents; family and tax questions require separate assessment.

A move built around an overseas job differs from a move into Slovenian employment. The digital nomad route keeps the foreign working arrangement at the centre of the application. The contract, the location of the business and the evidence of means matter together; a laptop and permission from a manager do not establish eligibility on their own.

The permit is not for people who would work for a Slovenian employer or enter the Slovenian labour market through local clients or a Slovenian company; that work is assessed under different rules.

Who qualifies for Slovenia’s digital nomad permit?

The Ministry of the Interior’s official definition covers non-EU/EEA nationals working remotely through communication technology in one of these arrangements:

  • employment with a business established outside Slovenia;
  • work under a civil-law contract for a business established outside Slovenia; or
  • self-employment abroad.

The arrangement must remain outside the Slovenian labour market. Qualifying digital nomads do not need the labour-market consent normally issued by the Employment Service. This exemption concerns the qualifying remote activity, rather than permission to take any job in Slovenia.

The work arrangement decides which route fits

Proposed activityWhat the assessment addresses
Continuing an overseas employment contract remotelyThe foreign employer, actual work and contract evidence
Providing services under a foreign business contractThe contracting entity and how the activity is performed
Working through self-employment abroadThe foreign activity and documents establishing its basis
Taking a role with a Slovenian employerA separate local employment route
Forming a Slovenian companyThe business role and appropriate residence/work basis

For example, an overseas employee retaining the same foreign contract raises a different question from a founder planning to operate through a newly registered Slovenian company. This is an illustrative comparison, not a report of client outcomes. The latter situation belongs in the assessment of company ownership and residence rights. Local recruitment is covered in our insight on living and working in Slovenia as a non-EU citizen.

How much income or financial means are required?

Applicants must show monthly means of at least twice Slovenia’s average net salary — a benchmark that moves with the figure most recently published in the Official Gazette, not a fixed euro amount. The official application form sets out this requirement. That is a changing benchmark, rather than a permanent euro price for the permit. The applicable published figure needs to be established for the filing date. Our digital nomad income insight explains the dated euro calculation and the difference between the benchmark and acceptable evidence.

The evidence question is separate from the calculation. A file is easier to assess when contracts, payments and the applicant’s explanation describe the same source of funds. A variable-income contractor may have several payment streams to explain; an employee may have a simpler salary record. The relevant evidence depends on the arrangement, and a high balance alone does not explain whether the work itself qualifies.

The applicant’s threshold is also separate from provision for accompanying relatives. Infotujci’s digital-nomad guidance expressly requires additional means for family members.

Which documents form the application file?

The Ministry’s application form identifies the core evidence:

EvidenceRequirement or practical question
Application and photographCompleted form and photograph or electronic-photo reference
PassportValid at least three months beyond the intended stay
Health insuranceAt least emergency healthcare in Slovenia; the form distinguishes applicants already compulsorily insured there
Financial meansEvidence meeting the applicable monthly benchmark
Criminal-record certificateCertificate from the applicant’s home country
Foreign work arrangementEmployment, civil-law contract work for a foreign business, or self-employment abroad performed remotely

The official form and attachment list are a useful reference for the initial discussion. They do not establish that a particular foreign document will be accepted in the form first supplied.

For a founder or contractor, the relationship between the contracting party, the paying party and the foreign activity deserves particular attention. Slovenia Law’s digital nomad application support reviews that structure and the document file together, identifies missing evidence and coordinates any necessary translations or certifications before submission.

Each document has to fit the specific case: the right proof of a foreign work arrangement, acceptable evidence of means, and papers in the form and certified translation the authority expects. Slovenia Law reviews the file for completeness and form before anything is submitted and, as this is an administrative procedure, can also represent the client before the competent authority under a power of attorney.

Where is the application submitted?

The filing route depends on the applicant’s current position. Official Infotujci process guidance distinguishes filing abroad through a Slovenian diplomatic or consular post from filing at an administrative unit while lawfully in Slovenia.

An application from abroad

The relevant representation and the document requirements shape the preparation timetable. Travel plans, the application appointment and the intended start of residence are separate dependencies. An application abroad is not itself a Slovenian residence permit.

An application while lawfully in Slovenia

The applicant’s lawful stay and its expiry date are part of the initial assessment. Infotujci describes a certificate for an application filed in Slovenia that permits stay pending the decision. This should not be treated as general permission for travel or unrelated employment.

The process also includes fingerprints, authority assessment and personal collection of the card. Address registration follows as applicable. A useful relocation plan includes those personal steps instead of assuming the entire process ends with an emailed form.

Which route applies depends on the applicant’s current status and lawful basis of stay, so it is assessed case by case rather than assumed.

Can a spouse and children apply at the same time?

Infotujci confirms immediate family reunification and the possibility of submitting a family application alongside the digital nomad application. The ordinary residence-duration waiting restriction does not apply to this route.

Each family member still has an application and evidence to establish. Relationship documents, additional means and the intended moving dates therefore belong in the initial plan. The main applicant’s eligibility does not by itself settle a spouse’s work rights. Slovenia Law’s residence service can coordinate the household assessment rather than treating relatives as an afterthought.

What changes at the end of the first year?

The government’s duration guidance limits the digital nomad permit to one year and does not allow it to be extended. A longer stay in Slovenia is therefore a separate question from the nomad card itself — and the single most important thing is to start arranging it as early as possible, not in the final months of the permit.

The right long-term path depends entirely on the individual’s circumstances, and the nomad permit does not carry it forward on its own. Slovenia Law prepares the options for other residence routes as well — including any applicable family-reunification or later permanent-residence route — assesses which of them realistically fits a given case, and arranges the appropriate basis in good time. As these are administrative procedures, Slovenia Law can also represent the client before the competent authority under a power of attorney.

The earlier this groundwork begins, the more room there is to choose the strongest route rather than the only one still available. The nomad permit does not guarantee what comes next; securing it is a matter of starting early and handling the right route correctly and on time.

Does the permit make foreign income tax-free?

The immigration permission does not establish a tax exemption. FURS explains tax residence on moving to Slovenia by reference to residential ties, including family and time spent in the country. More than 183 days in a calendar year is one relevant factor, not the only one. Residents are generally taxed on worldwide income; applicable tax treaties also matter.

The tax assessment therefore runs alongside the immigration file. A foreign employer or bank account is not enough to conclude that income falls outside Slovenian taxation. Family relocation and the planned length of stay belong in the same conversation with the tax adviser.

Two situations that look alike but need different evidence

A designer employed by a company abroad and a founder who owns a foreign company can both describe themselves as remote workers, yet their evidence differs. The first may rely on a foreign employment contract and salary records. The second needs evidence of the qualifying foreign activity and the actual work arrangement. Ownership alone does not establish eligibility, and neither file should be treated as permission to enter the Slovenian labour market.

Costs, timing and your next step

A realistic budget separates official charges, insurance, document preparation, translations or certifications and professional assistance. Official charges are confirmed for the filing route. The preparation timetable depends on the documents already available and the steps still needed before the authority can assess the application.

Slovenia Law can assess the proposed work, identify the appropriate residence route, prepare a tailored evidence list and coordinate the application and family steps. An initial brief is most useful when it contains nationality, present location/status, the foreign work arrangement, available financial evidence, intended dates and family plans.

Book a digital nomad residence consultation for an assessment of the arrangement and the steps needed before the move.

The initial assessment is free and without obligation; a short message with your nationality, your current country of residence and the type of remote work you do is enough to start.

Questions people ask

Common questions before applying

These answers explain the general rule. The applicant’s documents and personal history determine how it applies in practice.

Is the digital nomad visa a visa or a residence permit?

The formal status is a temporary residence permit for digital nomads under Article 51.a of the Foreigners Act. “Digital nomad visa” is the familiar search term, rather than the name of the issued residence status.

Does owning a foreign company qualify me automatically?

No. Ownership alone does not demonstrate the qualifying remote work. The assessment concerns the actual employment, contractual work or self-employment abroad and the evidence supporting that arrangement.

Does my financial evidence have to be a fixed salary?

Not necessarily. GOV.SI describes proof through lawful sources of means. The applicable monthly threshold and the evidence of those means still need to be established for the particular file.

Is a full year guaranteed if my contract is shorter?

No. Infotujci describes a permit linked to the employment or civil-law contract, with a maximum of one year. The one-year ceiling does not guarantee that duration in every case.

Does twice the average net salary cover the whole family?

No. Infotujci distinguishes the digital nomad’s own minimum from the additional means required for accompanying family members.

Do EU or EEA citizens need this permit?

This particular route is defined for people who are not EU or EEA nationals. EU/EEA citizens have a different residence framework, so this application checklist is not their starting point.

Can I take a Slovenian job after receiving the permit?

The nomad route does not provide general permission for local employment. GOV.SI allows a different-purpose residence application during its validity, but the new route and work authorisation must be independently established.

What is useful for a first consultation?

Nationality, present status, intended dates, the foreign employment or business arrangement, available evidence of means and any family plans provide a useful starting brief. Slovenia Law can then identify the route and missing evidence without assuming eligibility.
